The Next step in earning money at HubPages
76Start here!
- How to get started earning money in HubPages
Earning money on HubPages is not going to come easily, you are going to have to work for it. You are going to have to put some time into is as well, possibly several hours per day in the beginning. Anything...
There is always that Next step!
Yes, there is always a ‘next’ step when writing or doing anything, if you want to be successful. If you’ve read “How to get started earning on HubPages” are excited and raring to go, now it is time for the next step. It seems in life there is always something more doesn’t it? Well of course there is!
In my last Hub I explained that writing for HubPages was like starting a new job. You had to determine what kind of employee you were etc. I’m not going to reiterate everything I wrote in that Hub. If you want to know, please feel free to go read it.
Content is King!
When writing a Hub, you want to give good information. What that means exactly is this; Tell the person who is reading, something! Anything! Don’t hint around at what you are writing. Tell them what it is you want to say. How many times have you went to read an article anywhere on the internet to leave that page scratching your head, not only wondering what you just read, by why you stayed on it so long? Or possibly reading it to the end just hoping that the author was going to be going somewhere with the article?
You are going to hear the phrase “Content is King” on Hub Pages a lot. What that means to me is this, when writing a Hub, make sure that you are saying something to your readers! They might be stopping by your page in the hopes of finding an answer to a question. Give it to them, don’t leave them hanging.
Make sure that when you write about something, you know what you are talking about! You will certainly get questions if your Hub is good. If you have no clue as to what you are writing about, and someone asks you a question, what are you going to do? Google it? At the very least, you will want to be able to point your readers in the direction they need to go, to find an answer.
It doesn’t matter what you write about, just make sure you know what you are talking about. Don’t take someone else’s work turn the words around a bit then call it your own. If you happen to have an idea that someone else has written about, that is fine you can use the same type of topic, but make it your own work.
What's your Niche?
I have heard people talk about finding your own niche. That means you have found your place with which you like to write and are comfortable in it. There are numerous ‘types’ of writers. You have to determine which category you fit into. It may not come right away, it may take several Hubs for you to figure it out. This is fine, just keep on writing!
Some people like to write ’ad type’ of Hubs, that is great. If you can do that, go for it. I have written a couple of those, they don’t seem to do very well. That is just not my niche`, I’m sort of a homey person who writes like I talk. If I don’t’ know what I’m talking about, usually I just shut up and listen, or ask questions until I‘ve learned what it is that I need to know.
If you are going to write about a product, I would recommend you’ve at least tried using the product. People will be coming to your page for ‘expert’ advice, and if you haven’t tried the product your words will show it. You need not be an expert on the product, just at the very least someone who has tried it. For me, there is nothing worse than wanting to know more about a product only to find the same information that is shown in ads, or on the box. I usually get frustrated and either move on to the next product or give up on it altogether.
Keywords
You’re going to hear the word “Keyword” here on Hub pages. You might even be given a link to the keyword tool found on Google. I can tell you what I’ve found from using it. I am definitely no expert. I type in my keyword, google will tell me how many hits per month are found with that word. You can also find what it pays on the ‘pay per click’. Some people want to use ‘good keywords’ ones that are searched for a lot or high paying, what ever it is that you are looking for. In theory, this means that when people click on your page, it pays more. At least that is my take on it.
What I can say is this. I’ve found what I thought were ‘good keywords’ those Hubs don’t get a lot of attention. I’d be lucky if I got one page view per month on those. So you have to ask yourself, do you want people to come to your Hubs, read your work, maybe make a few cents or write a really high paying article that maybe gets a page view 2 or 3 times per year? It’s all up to you.
By reading comments and questions in the Answer section of HubPages, I have come to believe that people want page views. They want to be recognized for the work they have done. Writers want to know that people have come to their page to read. So are you wanting to get readers or just make money? This is how your going to determine what to write about.
Are you able to do both? Absolutely! If you choose good keywords (these you will have to find on your own) and are able to put them in a good article that people want to read, then of course you are going to make money.
Where is the money on HubPages?
How exactly do you make money on HubPages? First and foremost it will be with Google AdSense. Let me start off by saying what you may have heard before but need to be reminded. HUBPAGES DOES NOT PAY YOU! Sorry if I yelled at you, but it needs to be understood. HubPages gives you a PLACE to make money, they don‘t pay you. The writing is all yours, you have to be the one to put out good Hubs so that readers come to your page.
The money you make comes from outside sources. Google AdSense, Amazon, Kontera and E-bay. As of yet, I have only had earnings from Google AdSense. One day, someone may come to one of my pages and order something from the Amazon ads that I have included. Those would be the ’Ad’ Hubs, but like I said earlier, those don’t do well for me. They might work just fine for you. You’ll never know until you try.
I have not signed up for Kontera, Why? Because I have heard various things regarding it and I’m not sure I want to take the risk involved with it. Because I haven’t tried it, I can’t say whether it’s good or bad, so I will leave it at that.
In regards to E-bay, I don’t sell anything and that is what E-bay is all about. If I were to have items to sell then I might utilize E-bay. Then again, those would be ‘ad’ type Hubs and I’m not much for writing those.
How many words - Using Tags
When writing a good rule of thumb would be to use a minimum of 500 words. That seems like a lot but it really isn’t. I have read articles that have 200 words or less, they don’t say anything and then the Author wants to know why they aren’t making any money. If writing were easy, everyone would be able to do it. Not only that we’d all be rolling in the dough!
Now that you have written a few Hubs and I hope are making a few dollars what do you do next? You can do several things. You can either let it sit, and do nothing. You might continue to make money, your Hubs might dwindle.
If your Hubs should be starting to get a little ‘stale’, meaning not many page views per month, you can go to the page, look at it, see if it needs any changes. Click the edit button and do that. You can add some tags to it. Making sure that those ‘tag’ words are in your Hubs of course.
Back Links - What they are
After writing a few Hubs you can do ‘back linking’ with them. What this means if the Hubs you have written can be associated in any way with your other Hubs, insert a link on one of the words. To do this; click edit, then click on the capsule that you want to edit, highlight the word you want to use as a link, then click the icon that looks like a sideways 8. Another window will pop up and in the second space to the right you will see a down arrow. Click on that, all the Hubs you have written will be in alphabetical order. Click the Hub you wish to use. That’s it! You have now created a back link. You are still linking to your own website. The first one you seen in this Hub links to "How to get started earning money on HubPages".
Take care in using these! You don’t want too many back links, you Hub will get flagged if you do. You certainly want the word you have highlighted to have something to do with that particular word. People will see the highlighted word and click on it thinking that it is associated with that word. If it isn’t they may get frustrated and leave your site.
Comments
Lastly - Comments. Generally, most of your comments will be coming from other Hubbers. This is fine. You might get some from the general public, try not to be discouraged. Look at it this way, how many times have you read someone’s articles/Hubs and not left a comment? HubPages has tried to make their comment section user friendly, but I think some people may feel a little intimidated by the ‘name’ and ‘url’ part of the section. If by chance you have come to HubPages without being signed in, you’ll see what I am referring to. “name, url and comment” are all open waiting for you to type something in.
In the comment section you may also find other’s who are knowledgeable and what they add can only enhance your Hub. I love it when other Hubber’s come to my page and add things that I may have forgotten to put in, or just to expound a little more on what I have written. To me it means they have read the Hub and found something worthwhile in it.
When you do get comments, make sure you answer them. Even if it is just thanking them for reading. People want to know that you have recognized they were there. Think of it this way, when you go to the store to make a purchase and leave, if you’re not ‘Thanked’ isn’t that a bit discouraging? Don’t you feel as if your cashier doesn’t care if you come back? It’s just being polite, and the world needs a bit more kindness.
Just change the word from swimming to writing!
Best of Luck to you! Keep on Writing!! I think of Dorie in ‘Finding Nemo’ when I say this.

I think it's awesome that hub pages gives Us all a place to write whether we want to make money or just write. Ad Sense is the way to go, but I am not doing that yet. You really know you stuff thanks for all of us who are "newbies."
What is your opinion on earning money with 'info' and 'how to' type of hubs? I've heard that you want to attract readers who already have their credit card out and not those who are simply looking for information. Are these types of hubs a good niche?
Great information, susie, written in a sort of homespun "Will Rogers" friendly sort of way. That's a compliment, girl.
Again a great article Sweetsusieg. Don't feel you can't use Ebay unless your hub is selling something though. Most hubbers use Ebay (myself included), on hubs on any subject, so long as the keyword search for products is relevant to the hub. For example, my recent hubs on the correct way to feed wild birds include Ebay adverts for wild bird seed, bird tables, bird feeders etc, (all chosen by me).
I am interested by your 'backlinks' section, as I thought that as long as your backlinks stayed within hubpages and were 'on topic', there was no possibility of hubpages flagging you because the traffic you created to your other hubs was staying within the hubpage site. I could be wrong though!!
Sweetsusieg: as always you serv us hub writers well with your advice. Thankyou!
Thanks for this great hub. I still new at this so this hub hub is very informative. I also love your writing style. You write how you talk. I'm looking forward to your next. Thanks!
Your advice is timeless, Sweetsusie! Navigating this site is indeed a personal challenge, and in the end, we must find what suits us individually.
I'm not an 'ad' writer, either!
Thanks for an enlightening Hub.
Hi Sweetsusieg, 'backlinks to your own site' means if you have a site of your own external to Hubpages. Backlinking to other hubs within Hubpages written by yourself is not a problem, but if say you had a separate web site that sold baby clothes, and then you wrote an article on hubpages about the best baby clothes, inserting lots of links back to your 'external' website, then you would get flagged for taking the traffic away from the Hubpage site. (I hope this makes sense as it is hard to put into words).
The use of Ebay really doesn't require you to try and write a sales hub at all. If you have already got an Ebay affiliate ID (which you apply directly to them for, and is separate to a normal Ebay buying and selling account), you simply enter the affiliate ID code they gave you into the appropriate box on your affiliate page of hubpages in your account. Now any Ebay sales/clicks made on hubs you add Ebay capsules to will generate revenue for you in much the same way as Adsense does. All you need to do is choose products relevant to the hub topic. For example, if you published a hub about how much you enjoy growing your own herbs on your patio and then cooking them in your own recipes afterwards, you could add Ebay capsules containing adverts for herb seeds, herb growing kits, garden planters, recipe books, etc.
To add an ebay capsule simply choose it from the options you get when you add a new capsule on the left of your screen. Open the capsule and choose the option to enter a keyword search. Type in your words, e.g. 'Herb seeds'. A list of three will appear unless you selected the option to display more or less results before you clicked 'search'. Assuming you are happy with the ones that came up save the capsule and the decide if you want it in the middle or aligned to the side of your hub (the same as you do with Amazon capsules). If you don't like the search results change the search words and try again. You can add as many Ebay capsules to your hub as you want to, and each can display from 1 to 10 adverts. You also have the option to find the products on Ebay yourself and add them manually, but this is something time consuming and not really worth the hassle in my opinion. The adverts you get based on keyword searches will be renewed as each advert come to an end, and will be replaced automatically with ads that are current.
It is hard to explain, but you don't even need to think about it as 'writing a sales hub'. I bet if you go back through the hubs you already have published you could find loads of Ebay products that could be added to them even though you didn't write them for that reason.
voted this hub 'up' and useful. And, I've bookmarked it. Thanks. Happy Holidays to you.
No worries Sweetsusieg. Still no idea why Ebay won't accept new affiliates. I would have thought that by now they might have realised it was in their interests to begin accepting affiliates again.
Hope I was at least of some help with the backlinks issue :)
Both this Hub and the "How to get started..." Hub are extremely helpful to anyone wondering how HP works. I especially like the way you describe the reality of "working" here: this is not a get-rich-quick venue, but the rewards are there if you are willing to work.
Although I have an eBay affiliate account, I rarely use eBay capsules. In the nearly three years I've been here, I've earned a whopping five dollars in eBay sales. But I do well with Amazon to the point of receiving monthly payouts. Misty's excellent info about creating and using eBay capsules applies to Amazon as well.
I enjoy your conversational voice and "kingly" content. :) Write on!
Hey Sweetsusieg: Very, very helpful. I also was encouraged. Trying all I can. Guest I just keep at it. I appreciate your hub.
Reading articles such as this provides encouragement to me, along with some newly-found information. I keep reminding myself: baby steps. Wishing all the best of success.
I think of Dorie saying it too. Such a great hub. For the love of writing and to more success to you and other hubbers.=)
precisely the type of hub people need to read to understand the writing and money making aspects of Hubpages and you can tell you have written it as you would say it.
Cheers
Thanks for another great hub. Really makes a difference to 'newbies' like me.
Rated up. No wishy washy, just straight facts. I like the way you likened it to real life case. Thanks for sharing
Very good point driven at swimming to writing thing with the Nemo video! :) You are definitely right, we have just to keep on writing!!!
Super, Susie. Thanks again for the advice!
Best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy ,healthy, and prosperous New Year, Susie. Thanks for a helpful Hub. Ebay won't accept me as an affiliate and so I don't use their capsules. I use Amazon capsules but don't make any money there either. I write poetry and post photos and videos that I like. I don't get enough traffic to earn any money through Adsense either. I just love the Hub community and you couldn't pay me to leave. I read this Hub and others about keywords and Google and traffic but I am just too thick to get my head wrapped around all of it. All that I know is that frugal rhymes with Google. Cheers.
I admire your ability to create quality content so I read even though I'm not looking to generate cash. All the best.
I'm giving it a whirl! Thanks
really great story and learned how to use Hub
Thank you for all of your useful information. how long have you been doing hubpages?
Wow only 5 months and 128 hubs! That seems like a rapid pace and it seems you are a featured writer everyday. I bet you could teach us lots more about hub pages. Do all of your hubs get daily traffic?
I am freshly new to Hubpages, and this Hub is very informative and extremely reassuring for me and my "new job"! I'll probably follow you as one of my main mentors! :) Thank you!
wonderful Hub, and looks like great advice. I have a question though, you say that we should be trying to tell our reader something. What is that something?
I'm just joining today and I'm not sure what I want to discuss.
Thank you very much for your time Sweetsusieg.
One more question before I stop bothering you. What is the range of writings that can be shared. From what I've seen I've seen one poet and some good articles on Budgeting as well as Dog health. Is there any links to hubs that discuss good ranges of what makes a good hub?
Thanks for the info on backlinks. I had been wondering how to do that just last night but wasn't even sure what it was called. I am very green but having lots of fun thinking up stuff to write on my hubs and reading other hubs like yours. :)
Thanks for the article at Next step in earning money at HubPages.
Thanks, for the great advice!
Once again a great hub....Thanks so much for sharing!
First of all, it is ok to yell at us...we don't listen sometimes! We all need help. This very good information so listen up people!
I just wrote a hub on web filters and thought you might be able to offer some insight. If you have time sometime in the future to come and make a quick visit I would really appreciate it.

I am voting this up.
Thanks for this easy to read information. I have read "How to start earning money on Hub Pages and this is a very helpful follow up.
This is definitely helpful, I agree with you that content is King, all one needs to do is to focus on writing unique and original hubs (this can be quite a challenge)..from there I believe the dough can start rolling in.
Very good info thanks.
Thank you for the info in both of these hubs. Some great practical advice for this newbie who is feeling overwhelmed by information overload and still confused. I think I'll just write what I want to to start with and learn this a few steps at a time.
Wow really great info. I have been on here for 9 months but really but this as my main thing. You have helped me a lot in improving my hubs!
nice hub my dear friend
Hi! thank you for the useful information!!
I just opened my account and am looking around how people use here.
Thank you!!!
I've learned a lot form your hubs. Thank you.
Great information. Like you I do much better when I just write and don't worry so much about whether or not it is a topic that will pay more. Some seem to do well with that technique but for me just writing what I know and trying to do that well seems to bring the most readers.
amazing ... how can I write an article like you? everything perfect, thank you for all the info that inspire me...
I'm so glad these two articles were here. Made life so much easier. TT_TT I've currently just posted a couple of pieces of poetry... but I really don't know how up to the challenge HubPages is for fiction... So now I'm going to practice the essays that I suck at and try posting them. ^~; Thanks for your pieces; they're a real help!
Wow! You've got quite the following. This was an interesting hub. Thanks.
Ha! Silly me!! I couldn't figure out how people were leaving comments, but finally discovered I have to scroll allllllll the way down to the bottom of the page. Funny, usually this would be placed at the top for easy access. Ah, well. Que sara sara. I found it, and that's all that really matters.
Thank you Sweet Susie for your very informative and helpful, well written Hubs on how to get started in HubPages.
I like your style.
xo g
:) Things are different in every site you go to.
Seems most comments are on the bottom here in HubPages.
Why it took me so long to figure that out, I can only blame on my dippy streak and/or mentalpause :O
xo g
Good clear information, Sweet Susie. Because I just read you I too am going to start hub writing. I really appreciate all your info as it blows a lot of the fog and fear I have away.
Muchisimas Gracias
Hi,Sweetsueig,
I like what I have read on your hub.I joined hubs nine months ago and regret why I didn't continue writing.I feel uplifted by your guidance and will begin working immediately.Would you see what wrote nine months ago? make a comment. Thanks a lot.
Just stumbled into your place. You're a good writer. Like your style. As one who also writes in a kind of "stream of consciousness" fashion, it is sometimes difficult to make a piece "keyword rich" and do all the SEO stuff. I work at it...but, sometimes the writing part of me just takes over and I forget all the stuff I'm supposed to do with keywords, etc.
HI Susie: very useful article! I have read quite a few hubs on here about how to get started and make money and yours is one of the best. I am new to this and haven't written anything yet, but since I am newly unemployed I figured I could give myself a challenge and try to write a lot of good hubs in one week.
I don't think we will earn a lot from hubpages. I am standing on my 29th hub and reading your hub second time.
There are no more traffics may be my hubs are poor but I am trying to improve myself day by day because I just know learning is better than earning and feeling also.
I think It should be too better to write to the point. Its not necessary to play with word to elaborate or to make lengthy. Because it saves the time of readers and writers also.
Time is the most important things of human life.So trying to short comment on hub of SWEETSUSIEG who is a awesome writer and getting a millions of traffic.
Wish you all the best......I am following you
Thank you for all the information you are imparting to your readers especially newbies like me. It inspires me to get moving. More power to your hubs.:)
Another wealth of help and information, same friendly welcoming tone. You've done it again Sweetsusieg! Thanks so much. Cheers.
Another great one to bookmark. Thank you for sharing.
Take care
Eiddwen.
This is great! Very well written, and on a topic that I personally am hungry to know more about.
Have a great evening!
I like your hub, so easy to read. Awesome.
Yes, keywords, traffic and good content...and some social boomkarking for the hubs.
This was a really thorough hub. It made me rethink about the hubs I have been posting I am going to try and edit mine to make them a little better.
Thank you, rorshak sobchak
I am professional blogger but here just going to start my first Hub on hubpages... Really nice to red your article before starting...
Yet another great article susie. I love reading your work as it like im having a conversation more then reading an article. Your an inspiration!
Keep up to good work :)
Thank you for this Hub! Actually I read it more than three weeks ago before I joined Hub Pages. I was trying to figure out a little bit about it before I joined. Your writing was very helpful. Now re-reading this hub, it makes even more sense. Thank you so much for the tips.
One question, though, I still can't decide what length I want to shoot for. My last hub was about 1,800 words, and I think that's generally too long. But I just saw a recommendation of 500 words from a really good Hubber and that seems pretty short. (I do want to make some significant money writing, so length is a pretty big deal.)
Thanks so much for responding to my question. 800 words sounds like a good length as a general guideline.
I read both your hubs on money making. I enjoy your both articles and also i learn that article length should be not less than 500 words.
When will you publish the 3rd article in this series ?
This is great! I'm new here and I really learned a lot from your hubs.
Thanks and keep writing stuffs like these.
Hi, sweetsusieg. What a lovely unselfish hubber you've got in you by publishing productive information about writing hubs. I just signed in a few minutes ago, and it's so amazing I got to track you in here who gives out what every new hubber needs to know...Am so thankful sweetie, I am thrilled about this and hope I could become like you in the future. You're an angel.
Thanks for the encouragement sweetsusieg. Have yet to write my first hub though and my question is, when I publish my first hub do i have to affiliate in Google Adsense already or wait until my hubs reaches what number before I could earn? I couldn't understand as yet how hubs will earn.Does every hub earn or are there rejects? What are the factors that would really attribute in being paid high. Perhaps, that could be your 3rd article on hubpages or have you written on that topic already. Would really appreciate if you could enlighten me on this. Thanks so much.
Great hubs! I'm following you now! Awesome content. Great recommendations. Thank you!!!!
I bookmarked it too! And thank you for the fan mail!
I appreciate it!
I juast atarted hubapages last month and I am used to writing long novels and songs...I got a few hit on my first hubs and then the more I work and write, the less interest I have seen. I do understand I need to grab more interesting subjects and work on my content a lot before letting my fingers fly on the keyboard. I love writing so I will keep on and see what comes out of that. I want to be definitely criticized to grow and improve my abilities. Thanks for the info, I bookmark you and will read you afgain and again to learn. Thanks a lot.
Very informative hub! I'm just starting my writing by blogging and recently joined here so I need all the info I can get. Thanks and keep 'em coming!
Great hub! I'm new and absorbing info like a sponge. Thank you for sharing. voted up, interesting, useful, and awesome!
Great hub susie. Well written and informative
Very good tips thx! :]
Great information. I have a question about Google Adsense. I signed up and I am approved. I am not sure how to paste the code into my hubpages to show google adds. They also tell you to name the code. I am not sure what they mean to use for the name of the code. I am trying to read all of the information. I am stumped on this one.
Thank you very much for the information. There is so much to take in.
Hi, sweetsusieg. Until this time I haven't posted yet my first hub. I had already started it but hasn't got really the time to focus on it. Tasks at the office stucked me this time. Anyway, once I had published it, I wish you would be able to comment on it, if it fits to be called a hub. I would really appreciate it so much. I just wonder how could this be able to attract readers. I've come across on your articles and from others also about keywords which could enable other people to read by having the keywords in my article to become search words in search engine like google. I couln't understand as yet, how this works. My question is, how my hub can be searched in a search engine, how keywords could be linked whatever to other search engine. Please enlighten on this on a simplier way. Hope, soon I could already post my hub.
Thanks so much for the help...
I have had the same question since I have started writing on hubpages
Yes, That confirms how I thought it all works. Thanks again
Oh, sweetsusieg, it's clearer to me now. Now the next step that I have to do is apply it on my first hub. Thanks a lot for all the enlightening...
Sadly between the new ad format and the heavy handed tactics of the owners/publishers of hubpages the opportunity to make real money is not there any more. Sure you can piddle around a bit and make some lunch money, but the investment in time to payout is just not there for most. I've watched the system collapse on itself. I understand the motives for change - everyone is scared of Big G so they try and kiss their A)), but big G could care less. So that leaves things in the state of "it is what it is".
Very helpful information, Sweetsusieg! Thank you. As a new "Hubber" it answered a lot of questions.
great info and believe me thats hard to find. keep them coming!
LOL! There is nothing like those product reviews from people who have never actually used the product! Just like you, I tried a product review hub and I didn't like it: plus, it was tedious, time consuming, and just plain not fun for me. This hub has helped me to realize that I am a "homey" person as well. If I don't stick to the things I love, Hubpages feels like a chore to me...
Thanks for creating this interesting hub.
Thanks for the guidance and you are right content is King, I would highly appreciate your effort if you write about presentation of content. Thank You.
Hi,
Thank you for the solid information. I have been active in blogging/creating websites for a year now. But I have only started using hubpages recently. So I am still checking into what is the most successful in types of hubs, and what is expected and allowed in hubs. I also think that Google Adsense is likely going to be my most productive earning. I am using my hubs as a traffic source to my websites as well, (hopefully:), but it is cool that hubs can earn money by themselves also. I consider that a bonus!
As good as the Part 1 hub! Great info. I don't understand the sideways 8 reference; I'll have to look at that. Bookmarking this hub, for sure!
Good article, i could findout some answers of some questions, thanks.
Howdy. Very interesting hub. But I am not sure my goofy poetry attracts enough traffic to make any moola. Thanks for the read.
There is always a next step. Thanks for sharing your ideas.
Hi Sweetsusieg
Thank you for a very interesting and helpful hub.
sincerely,
John MacNab

Oh yeah! Excellent Hub sweetsusieg! Thanks for sharing. Looking good, looking good.
